Foundation for Chiropractic Progress
Positive Press Campaign
September Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month

September has been designated Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month by the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD) on the American Hospital Association official health care calendar.

Sponsored by the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, this nationwide annual campaign is crucial in raising public awareness of chiropractic care as the preferred first-line approach to safe and effective management of low back, neck and neuro-musculoskeletal pain.

It's our opportunity to position chiropractic care as an important response to prescription opioid use and abuse that leads to addiction and catastrophic outcomes - 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.

80 percent of drug abusers begin the downward spiral with prescription painkillers... Let's put chiropractic care in this conversation!

Support the campaign: Save Lives. Stop Opioid Abuse. Choose Chiropractic.

Plans & Events for Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month

A month-long series of activities and media events provide education and information:

  • Helps Saves Lives: choose chiropractic care before taking prescription opioids;
  • Position the chiropractic profession: first-line approach for drug-free pain management.

Take these immediate steps to leverage the campaign and enhance your local practice:

  1. Request your local Mayor and/or City Council, Chamber of Commerce or other civic organization to sponsor a formal Resolution commemorating the month of September 2017 as Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month.
  1. Collaborate with your State Association to have a State Representative sponsor a formal Resolution in the State Legislature. Below are links to the suggested letter and resolution:

  2. Notify your local media with a press release on August 29, 2017 and letter to the editor from the State Association or individual doctors commemorating September 2017 as Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month.

  3. Print and display copies of the Resolution in your office and share on social media.

What we will do nationally -- combined with your local activities -- will elevate public awareness and utilization of chiropractic care as the optimal approach to pain management that averts opioid use and abuse.

September Roadmaps for the States and Individual Doctors

The Foundation's September campaign will include two strategic communications plans to guide the State Associations and the individual doctors in the planning and implementation of its September 2017 Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month initiatives. The activities in September are designed to raise consumer awareness of safer, drug-free pain management options, such as chiropractic, before taking opioids.

The State Association, its doctor members and the individual doctors can achieve local and regional public relations objectives through the execution of a variety of tactics, which includes reviewing our members-only marketing toolkit, website and September calendar.

To follow and execute those tactics during the September campaign, please download the State Association Roadmap: http://www.f4cp.com/hosted/e-newsletter/2017/july/roadmap.pdf. The individual doctor roadmap is still in production and will be available later this month.

The Opioid Crisis in Various States

A national crisis across the United States has been the escalating use of prescription opioids for pain management. As specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 33,000 lives were lost to opioid overdose in 2015, nearly half of those involving a prescription opioid.

America’s opioid epidemic is affecting various states, families and communities as a serious public health issue. The Foundation has been closely monitoring state by state stories on the opioid crisis. To read about what’s happening, click on a state below:
