Dr. Bill Updyke Presents at Traditional Medicine Forum in Shanghai

William Updyke, DC, of San Jose, CA, recently presented “History, Present and Future of Chiropractic,” at the Shanghai University of Traditional Medicine in China. Dr. Updyke was one of several participants who attended the “Shangahi International Forum on Traditional Medicine” that focused on the methods and practices of health and wellness that were developed regionally and throughout the world. The attendees included regulators and practitioners of traditional medicine as well as Homeopathy from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Africia, Arabic and Islamic countries. Subject matter included health policy strategies and approaches to health care, as well as future plans and ideas to promote and develop standards.

Dr. Updyke’s presentation was focused on the rich history of chiropractic, its current educational and licensing requirements, as well as the current practices of wellness and integration with medical practices. Regarding the future of the profession, he drew on his experience with on-site clinics and integrative health to discuss advancing chiropractic alongside mainstream medicine and how they can be complementary. Among his future predictions was the use of the Internet of things - IOT - or technology that will allow for better monitoring of patients through integrated postural and muscle functioning devices. Machines like the Apple Watch already measure heart rate, and soon fabrics with integrated chip technology will measure muscle function as well as postural positioning. This will help doctors of chiropractic and other health providers better treat their patients and intervene early for more successful health outcomes.

“Chiropractic care has matured more, from a professional development perspective, than a lot of the other traditional medicine providers. Because of my perspective working in an on-site clinic I focused more on how the future of chiropractic could blossom within the current medical system by better utilizing integrated care along with adopting new technology,” Dr. Updyke concludes.
