Gallup Poll Findings

Palmer College of Chiropractic (PCC) commissioned Gallup to conduct the first-ever nationally representative annual survey measuring the perceptions of, and experiences with, chiropractic care among U.S. adults.

The report, entitled: "Gallup-Palmer College of Chiropractic Inaugural Report: Americans' Perceptions of Chiropractic," surveyed more than 5,000 adults and documented:

  • An estimated 33.6 million U.S. adults (14 percent) used chiropractic care within the last 12 months – an increase based on previous findings from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), which measured yearly chiropractic use at about 20.6 million U.S. adults (8 percent).
  • More than half of U.S. adults have a positive perception of doctors of chiropractic (DCs), and agree DCs are effective at treating neck and back pain
  • Nearly 50 percent of respondents who didn’t see a DC cited trustworthiness, along with other issues as possible reasons
  • 85 percent of U.S. adults were unsure of the correct educational requirements to become a DC

The report will be repeated for at least two more years.

On August 27th, 2015, Dr. Dennis Marchiori, Chancellor of PCC, addressed the F4CP Board, detailing the findings of the Gallup Poll, which also suggest 49 percent of U.S. adults have NEVER seen a doctor of chiropractic, for reasons including but not limited to: trust, safety and cost concerns, and the perception that DCs do not have patients' best interest at heart.

Moving forward, the F4CP positive press campaign will be using the Gallup findings as a framework to address important issues in public perception including the education of a DC, uncertainty on the safety and cost of chiropractic, and most importantly the "trust gap."

The F4CP can and will provide the resources to better educate and inform the public about the valuable role of doctors of chiropractic in the management of low back pain and spine-related conditions, as well as general health concerns.

Special Thanks to Dr. Steven Kraus

Last month, during Florida Chiropractic Association’s National Convention & Expo, in Orlando, FL, Steven Kraus, DC, CCSP, made a personal contribution to the F4CP in the amount of $10,000.

The impressive donation, made directly after a presentation communicating the results of the Gallup poll, recognizes the important role the F4CP has in molding public perception in their successful positive press campaign.

To better reflect the findings of the Gallup poll, the F4CP will now communicate TRUST – an important issue to Dr. Kraus and the chiropractic community – as a central component of its future ad campaigns.

Dr. Kraus is a seasoned professional in the chiropractic community for the past 27 years and served as the chair of the Iowa Board of Chiropractic Examiners, former American Chiropractic Association’s (ACA) Iowa Delegate and former president of the Iowa Chiropractic Society. Additionally, Dr. Kraus is the Chief Market Strategy Officer for ChiroTouch and is Founder of the SmartCloud electronic health records and chiropractic practice management software.

The F4CP is grateful for your generous support, Dr. Kraus!

In The News: Onsite Corporate Health Clinics

Recently, Employee Benefit News published an article entitled, "Onsite clinics appealing, despite Cadillac tax uncertainties," which addresses employers' growing interest in onsite clinics in spite of the uncertainty around the Affordable Care Act's possible excise tax on employer-sponsored care offered through onsite clinics. To read the original article click here.

The F4CP is a major advocate of the growing role of doctors of chiropractic in onsite corporate health clinics.

Each year, the F4CP attends several employer-sponsored events in an effort to infiltrate and educate the employer market on the benefits of chiropractic care. Additionally, the F4CP has written a white paper entitled: The Growing Role of Doctors of Chiropractic in Onsite Corporate Health Clinics, which reviews current industry trends, and articulates the role of chiropractic care to optimize clinical and financial management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions among workforce populations. The white paper can be downloaded here.

Vendor Spotlight of the Month – Michigan Association of Chiropractors

Much of the F4CP's success can be attributed to its contributors. This month, we recognize Group Member, Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC), for its outstanding support.

In 2015, MAC has pledged $50,000 to the F4CP to be presented in two installments. The F4CP has received the first installment in the amount of $25,000 and will receive the remaining $25,000 in December 2015.

To date, MAC has contributed $152,640 to the F4CP.

It is because of our valuable contributors, such as MAC, that the F4CP can continue to fulfill its important mission, and we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support.

PLEASE NOTE: The F4CP would like to express sincere appreciation to all contributors – including individuals, colleges and state associations. In future newsletters, the F4CP will recognize those who have been strong contributors over the years. Stay tuned!

Doctor Spotlight of the Month – Dr. Tom Klapp

Tom KlappThis month, the F4CP spotlights Dr. Tom Klapp for his long-standing commitment and loyalty to the F4CP and profession.

In March 2005, Dr. Klapp became the first monthly contributor to pledge $100 – setting the stage for other members to follow. To date, Dr. Klapp has contributed $11,100 to the F4CP, which has greatly influenced the organization's ability to generate promotional materials -- including press releases, advertisements, print advertorials, television/radio public service announcements and sponsored research -- and further inform the public about the benefits of chiropractic care.

He serves as an F4CP Board Member and is a practicing DC in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Read his incredible story here: www.firstchoicechiropractic.com/dr-thomas-klapp/.

“When Kent Greenawalt first rolled-out the idea of the F4CP at a COCSA meeting in New Orleans, I knew it was badly needed and I believed it would make a difference. So, I immediately signed-up. I’ve been a contributor ever since. Not only have I contributed, but my wife, Kim Klapp (Assistants for Chiropractic Excellence) makes an additional monthly contribution from her business. I’m proud to have been the very first supporter and I’m proud to continue to support the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. The chiropractic story is the best-kept secret in health care and the Foundation is working hard to get it out to the public."- Dr. Tom Klapp
