Standard Process Joins MILLION-DOLLAR CLUB

The F4CP is pleased to announce that one of its earliest supporters, Standard Process Inc., has officially surpassed the million-dollar donation mark, with total contributions expected to exceed $1,057,000 in 2014. This impressive donation has helped to steadily increase the number of media impressions generated by the F4CP, which amounted to over 31 billion in 2013.

Standard Process makes numerous charitable donations to local, state and national organizations, and encourages its employees to do the same. Over the years, several Standard Process distributors and representatives have selected to support the F4CP, with contributions totaling over $35,000.

To date, Foot Levelers, the global leader in postural support products, is the only other organization to achieve this level of sponsorship.

F4CP Promotes the Role of Chiropractic at the Olympics

During the 2014 Winter Games, February 7-23, the F4CP ran two relative advertisements in the Wall Street Journal. The first, celebrated both the athletes competing and the chiropractic doctors serving. The second, featured the chiropractic story of two-time Olympian Caitlin Cahow, who represented the U.S. as a delegate in Sochi at the request of President Obama.

F4CP Promotes the Importance of Chiropractic
for Super Bowl Athletes

Great news! The F4CP recently distributed a press release, which brings attention to the important role of chiropractic care in keeping athletes healthy.

The F4CP congratulates the Seattle Seahawks on their victory at Super Bowl XLVIII. According to experts at the F4CP, the good health and impressive athletic performance displayed by the athletes can, in part, be attributed to the dedicated and diverse team of on-staff healthcare professionals, including team chiropractor, Dr. Jim Kurtz.

Healthcare personnel who serve professional athletes and teams generally encompass medical doctors, doctors of chiropractic, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers and support staff. Utilized by all 32 NFL teams, doctors of chiropractic are qualified to diagnose, treat and manage a broad spectrum of health conditions. For athletes, chiropractic care helps to reduce the risk of injuries, and improve health and performance through enhancements in range of motion, flexibility, muscle strength and other key factors.

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

Recently, there has been increased attention given to the harmful effects of acetaminophen for women during pregnancy. In a report published in the current issue of JAMA Pediatrics, researchers from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health show that taking acetaminophen during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder among children.

Jeff Chap MD, director of maternal fetal medicine at Cleveland Clinic is quoted, "We really should start looking at non-pharmacological ways to deal with pain."

Chiropractic provides a conservative alternative to pain relief and wellness, and the F4CP will be promoting the benefits through a press release and public service announcement. Stay tuned for more details.

New York Times Reports Positives of Chiropractic

A recent article published by the New York Times, "Golfers' Will to Win Gets a Boost From Pit Crews for Aching Bodies," discusses the importance of health regimens to keep athletes performing their best. In one excerpt, chiropractic care is mentioned:

"At 20, Jordan Spieth is at the age where he could get away with rolling out of bed and proceeding directly to the first tee. And yet, he has a chiropractor in his traveling entourage. 'I don't experience any injuries and I don't expect to going forward because I feel like I have the right program,' Spieth said."

F4CP Submits Media Response

Weight Watchers, a prominent health magazine, recently questioned the efficacy of chiropractic care. In response, the F4CP submitted a letter to the editor. Please click here to view the article in question and you can read the F4CP's response below.

Dear Editor:

In reading "Step It Up: Instant Relief," featured in your March/April 2014 issue, I was pleased to see a strong emphasis placed on non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical approaches to caring for low back pain rather than a push for more potentially harmful options, such as prescription medications and cortisone injections.

However, I was taken aback by the article's outdated conclusion that more research needs to be conducted to deem chiropractic care - one of the most widely used, evidence-based strategies for low back pain relief - a mainstream clinical approach.

Since the 2011 Cochrane Review, there has been important new research published that documents the clinical and economic value of chiropractic care. Please find a list of studies below:

When addressing patient care options for low back pain, the public deserves to be provided a current and accurate depiction of the research supporting chiropractic care.

The HIPAA Hazard You Need to Know About Before April

The message below has been brought to you by ChiroTouch, the premier provider of fully certified, innovative chiropractic software technology solutions for the chiropractic industry.

Microsoft announced that extended support for Windows XP ends on April 8, 2014. After this date, Microsoft will not release any security patches or updates for Windows XP. This will effectively make Windows XP non-compliant with HIPAA/HITECH after Microsoft support ends. XP users in the healthcare space are encouraged to upgrade their hardware so they can remain in compliance.

Steps to Your Upgrade Strategy:

  1. Remove any unneeded XP Computers in your office.
  2. Determine whether your current software will work on a contemporary OS, or if a software upgrade or complete transition will be required for compatibility.
  3. Inventory Windows XP computers in use that are required for operation.
  4. Evaluate new software and hardware options such as devices, mobility apps, or all-in-one systems with touch screens that can reduce the number of total desktop replacements.

List of Accountable Care Organizations Compiled

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) continue to emerge nationwide due to their promise to deliver optimal healthcare at attractive rates. ACOs rely on coordinated care by groups of doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers to produce outcomes. Doctors of chiropractic can play a significant role in advancing the cost–savings and clinical efficiency of this model. The F4CP has developed a white paper that details the important role of chiropractic within ACOs. To download the F4CP white paper, click here.

In 2014, the F4CP will focus its efforts on providing the chiropractic profession with additional resources relative to ACOs. Already, the F4CP has compiled a list with contact information of all ACOs nationwide. This list will be included within a tool kit, designed to support doctors of chiropractic interested in becoming involved with an ACO. The F4CP has selected experts from across the country to participate on a committee to develop the ACO tool kit. The F4CP expects the tool kit to be released to the profession later in the year.

As many can recall, the F4CP spent significant time and effort on a pilot program with URAC to help bring a medical home certification to the chiropractic profession. Unfortunately, this project has endured several challenges, due to a change of administrators, and may cause the F4CP to pursue other avenues. The F4CP is still strongly advocating the completion of the URAC project and will provide updates as received. The medical home model is one that presents great opportunity for doctors of chiropractic, and the F4CP encourages the chiropractic profession to continue to learn more and attempt inclusion where possible.

The F4CP has produced several items relative to the role of chiropractic within the medical home, please feel free to download these items below.

Focus Groups Provide Valuable Guidance

The F4CP has conducted several focus groups to support the development and launch of its latest ad series. The goal of the new series – which we hope will be utilized by the majority of F4CP members - is to encourage more patients to seek chiropractic care. The F4CP champion series has done a good job in positively promoting the profession, but now it is time to take messaging to the next level.

The F4CP conducted its first set of focus groups, on the East and West Coast, in November, which resulted in the development of 10 new ads that incorporated desired images and messaging suggested by the groups. Following the development of the new ads, one focus group was conducted on the East Coast to gather feedback. A second group will be conducted within the next few weeks on the West Coast. Once completed, all new ads will be updated and shared with F4CP membership.

BONUS: The new ads will include a link to the F4CP doctor directory for patients to locate a local doctor of chiropractic. This new directory is expected to launch in April.

Summit Participates in F4CP Discussion

The F4CP presented the results of its focus groups at the recent meeting of the Chiropractic Summit, held at the National Chiropractic Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. The Summit, which represents a cross section of the profession's leadership, provided some interesting insights after Laura Carabello made the presentation on behalf of the F4CP. From the conversation, the F4CP received consensus on the following marketing concepts:

  • Consider Chiropractic First or Choose Chiropractic First
  • Spinal Health and Well Being
  • Relief Without Drugs or Surgery

Given the diverse views of the leadership in attendance, it is significant that the F4CP was able to bring about some consensus.

Jerry Rice and Athletic TIPS™ at Palmer West Homecoming

NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice will make an appearance on May 3rd, at the Palmer West campus in Sunnyvale, CA during the school's homecoming, May 2-4, 2014. Rice will participate in a brief conversation during a general session and then take photos with attendees who sign up as F4CP contributors. To view additional details about the program, visit: www.palmer.edu/homecoming.

In addition to Jerry Rice's appearance, the F4CP is also conducting an Athletic TIPS™ certification seminar on May 3, 2014. This eight-hour seminar has been approved for CE credit. Registration for the seminar will be included within the homecoming admission, but those who attend must be monthly contributors to the F4CP. For more information about Athletic TIPS™ please read the section entitled, "Membership Benefit of the Month."

F4CP Presents at NCLC

The National Chiropractic Legislative Conference provided the F4CP with several opportunities to interact with doctors and students from throughout the country. It's a great event that gives the profession a chance to demonstrate unity to members of Congress - promoting several pieces of legislation, including one that would increase the number of VA hospitals including chiropractic care. In addition to participating in the Summit, the F4CP addressed the ACA House of Delegates and SACA.

Standard Process Wellness Program Receives National Honors

The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) selected Standard Process Inc. as a recipient of WELCOA's Platinum Well Workplace Award. The platinum award is the highest honor WELCOA presents, and is earned by companies who distinguish themselves as leaders and innovators in workplace health promotion. Standard Process was one of 13 companies, and the only manufacturing company, nationwide to receive the platinum award level. To read the press release detailing this award, visit: Standard Process.

Standard Process is having the outcomes achieved through its wellness program analyzed by a highly regarded university, and expects to release an authoritative report later in 2014. The F4CP will help to share this reports with employers and healthcare professionals nationwide.

There are a growing number of major companies that have established onsite health clinics to contain costs and improve the healthcare of its workforce. Several include chiropractic care as a core service. The F4CP is making an effort to communicate the popularity and role of chiropractic care within onsite clinics to the employer community. The F4CP will sponsor a program in September with the National Association of Worksite Health Centers at which Standard Process will speak to the group of attendees (primarily employers) about its experience. Standard Process expects to publish a white paper detailing its outcomes later in 2014.

An Event to Remember

Over the years, the F4CP has been involved with and sponsored a number of important events. One of the most memorable was when the Thayer Hotel dedicated a room to distinguished West Point graduate, U.S. Army Brigadier General, Rebecca Halstead (Ret.), spokesperson for the F4CP, on November 2, 2011. The Thayer Hotel, a historical landmark at the United States Military Academy located at West Point, NY, offered 149 guest rooms and several common areas to those graduates whose global and national accomplishments were well deserving.

The room sponsorship not only supported the honorable achievements of Halstead, but also financially supported the complete renovation of the room, including customized décor reflecting Halstead's significant contributions worldwide. Recognized for hosting five U.S. presidents, along with countless world leaders, the Thayer Hotel's dedicated rooms embrace occupants with a wealth of comfort, technological convenience and inspiration. Halstead's acknowledged sponsor was the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, though funding was specifically provided by the following companies: Foot Levelers, Standard Process, Performance Health, Northwestern Health Sciences University and Parker University. Halstead joins a distinguished roster of military heroes who honored with rooms bearing their names, including: General Douglas MacArthur, General Barry McCaffery and General Martin E. Dempsey.

The F4CP is proud of General Halstead and its efforts to make her name one of the few that will be recognized in the prominent hotel forever.

As the F4CP reported previously, General Halstead has a new book on leadership that includes her life story and specifically talks about her experience with chiropractic. To order your copy, visit: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1451592876.
